The Rară Neagră grapes were grown and harvested in vineyards in southern Moldova, in the Bugeac region. These have become the basis of premium wine making.

Rara Neagra means "rare black" in Romanian. The other name for this grape is Băbească neagrăwhich means 'grandmother's black grapes'. Since it is a very old grape variety, it is an appropriate name. The wine plant flowers late, so there is no chance of night frost. On the other hand, it does require a lot of attention in the vineyard, because it grows wild and strong. The grape produces light red wines with lots of red fruit and a high acidity. Rara Neagra symbolizes the national grape for the Moldovan blue grapes.
